3:08 am - Update
It's been a long time since I've touched this journal at all, and chances are it will be a very long time before I use it actively again. You see, I'm currently in the process of settings up a wordpress blog elsewhere. If anyone is interested in my new journal, leave me a (screened) comment, and I'll give the URL to you.

Also, I'm going to be spending four months this winter in the Seattle area. If any of you happen to be located near there, let me know and perhaps we can meet up at some point.

11:54 am - Wisdom Teeth
Just had my wisdom teeth out. My mouth is still mostly frozen. I'll find out how much fun I'm in for in an hour or two, I suppose.

I also discovered that all anaesthetists seem to make jokes about how the anaesthetics tastes. I suspect some sort of conspiracy.

There aren't words for any of the really important things. Feelings, memories, experiences. . .

To paint a picture of an instant in time, a feeling, the experience of being there. . .

Moments are fleeting, and inspiration is a choice.

Note to self: Wake up!

12:13 am - Stress
Yesterday, I worked 10 hours. Then I tutored someone for 4 more. Add in the time taken to prepare meals and eat, and for getting to and from work, and you have my day.

Today, I did the same.

I will continue like this for the rest of the week. Saturday will be much the same, only I'll probably only work 4 hours or so.

Jobmine. If you're reading this, and you happen to go to the University of Waterloo, that word may very well send a chill down your spine.

This has to be one of the worst pieces of software I've had the distinct non-pleasure of using in the past year or so. Its supposed to let students easily apply to jobs, go through a fairly standard interview process, and then accept/decline the resulting job offers. However, its design leaves the user feeling nearly constantly annoyed.

The back button works less than 25% of the time, for no discernible reason. (It isn't even possible to reproduce these successes. The same series of actions may do something completely different the next time.) Several of my friends have had the system mangle their standards-compliant HTML resumes, inserting odd characters and stripping or otherwise modifying tags without warning.

Just today, the system told me I had been scheduled for an interview for a job that the system doesn't think I even applied for. (Unfortunately, I can't remember whether I actually applied for it or not. But the system is still obviously very wrong.) And this is by no means an extensive list of errors.

Why would I complain so much about this? Well, you see, everyone in the Coop program at the University of Waterloo pays a fee of roughly $445 per semester. There are over 10,000 of us. I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to figure out exactly how much money that leaves us paying collectively for this marvelous level of service. I mean, with the help of one or two of my friends, I'm sure I'd have no problem building a better system then this over the course of a Coop semester. (And no, this system was not built by incompetent coop students. It was built by PeopleSoft, the same people who build most of the Universities web applications.)

Maybe the bugs will be worked out eventually. But the system has already been in operation for a full semester. It seems like most of the bugs currently in the system will probably be there to stay.

That was a great weekend.  (Especially because I took Tuesday off to stretch it even longer)

Friday I got a ride home with Graeme, a co-worker of mine.  (Which helps a lot.  Saved me around $20 in misc. transportation costs.)  Visited with family for awhile, and then hung out with [info]hotohorisama for the rest of the evening.

Saturday, I visited a prospective landlord for the fall term.  Very nice people, and perhaps an excellent place to live.  (I'll find out exactly how excellent or possible by Friday)  Then, I headed up to my parents farm near Orangeville, and helped my Dad with various projects (mostly lawn mowing and "landscaping", otherwise known as moving huge rocks)

Sunday - More projects.

On Monday, [info]hotohorisama came up to visit and hang out for a bit.  We went for a walk in the forest, visited the kittens in the barn, and then had dinner with some of my relatives who were in Ontario for vacation.  Then, after dinner we went for a swim.  (By the way, I'm horribly out of shape and practice with swimming.  Makes sense, given I haven't swam in ages, but I should make a habit of swimming during the school year or something.  After all, my girlfriend is a lifeguard.)  This was followed by a nice drive back to the city, accompanied by dry lightning and the occaisional brief downpour.

Tuesday morning I went out to brunch with her family, and then we drove up to near Barrie to go swimming again.  I was much better this time, although still nowhere near the level I used to be at.

And now, as I'm writing this, I'm on the bus back to Waterloo.  It was a great weekend, but the rest of the month is probably going to suck.  We have an upcoming deadline at work, and I need to bank some extra hours to make up for the slightly shorter last month of my work term.  I also need to do some more work on my Work Term Report (although at least it's progressing nicely), figure out where exactly I'll be during the fall, and try and make enough time to visit or be visited by [info]hotohorisama on the weekends.

So yeah.  Great weekend.  Busy month.  I'm sure it won't be nearly as bad as I'm anticipating now, things never are.  But it will certainly be a bit hectic.

Well. The week just keeps getting better and better. (Just to be clear, that's sarcasm)

Today was another 10 hour day at work. After work, I arrived home to find that the phones in the house are all dialtone-less. If they're still like that tomorrow, I'll complain to the landlord. Hopefully I have his email around here, because I don't think I'll have much luck phoning him.

It's almost the long weekend, so things can't stay crappy for too long. And if they do, it's still a long weekend.

Well, today sucked.

On the way to work, I managed to fall off my bike. Not very badly, mind you, just a skinned knee, and a bit of general soreness. For those who have never studied any martial arts, I strongly recommend taking Aikido or Jiujitsu for a couple of months just to learn how to breakfall. Very useful.

Then I had a 10 hour day at work. I actually got quite a bit accomplished, so it looks like I may actually meet the Wednesday deadline.

Finally, I dropped by a voting station on the way home, only to be told that it wasn't the right one, and that because of my 10 hour day, I was too late to get to the one I was supposed to be at. Frankly, I'm a little disgusted, because they had me registered in the incorrect riding to begin with so I didn't know *where* I was actually supposed to go. The people at the station weren't all that polite or helpful either.

So, all in all, today sucked. But there's a long weekend coming up, so hopefully that will make up for some of this.

I hereby declare this day a Good Day.

Why you ask? (Ok, so you didn't. But I'll tell you anyways.)

Firstly, I got far more done at work today than I'd expected, and seem to have broken things barely at all. I also have a potential lead for housing for next semester, and another lead for a co-op placement in the winter term. (Although no guarantees on either.)

Furthermore, I heard from an old friend who I haven't talked to in ages today. (Sure, it's my own fault for not emailing them, but that doesn't make it any less nice.)

And to top it all off, the weather today was wonderful. Sunny, but not too hot, with no clouds and a nice breeze all day. And after I got home it started to rain, with a bit of thunder thrown in to boot.

Earlier this week, during my company's Computer Game Night, I slaughtered everyone in StarCraft (and was slaughtered in Quake 3).

It's days like this that make you not care that your laptop has come down with a relatively minor virus. Although as I speak it's being eradicated.

I'm a few days late updating, as usual.

Last weekend was great. I went home to visit [info]hotohorisama and we ate tons of sushi. I really need to find an "all you can eat" Japenese restaurant, it'd save both of us tons of money.

There hasn't been too much else of note recently.

10:04 am - Bus Ride Home
It occurs to me that I should really be writing in this more often. Partly because it's one of the few ways I communicate with several of my close friends, and partly because my writing skills are deteriorating.

I'm going home this weekend to visit my girlfriend, [info]hotohorisama, because we promised we'd have sushi together at some point this weekend. It's a five bus ride home, although most of those are local. (Technically only 4 today, but that's because I have to walk part of the way) It'll take a little while.

And, on a very good note, Friday was payday. I now have a fairly large check burning a hole in my pocket. Well, not really burning. I'm probably going to end up saving most of it towards tuition and hopefully a little bit of a vacation. The parts that aren't spent on living expenses.

And possibly an mp3 player.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for me about mp3 players? I need something with 5GB+ space that's compatible with both windows and linux. So far, I'm looking at the products iRiver has to offer, because I know they're for the most part linux friendly.

And, for some reason, I have a craving for fish right now.

I want sushi. Or smoked salmon. Or anything, really.

9:36 pm - Camping Trip
Last weekend, I hosted a camping trip at my parent's farm near Orangeville. All in all, it was a very good time, despite the rain. We ended up sleeping in the barn because several people had forgotten to bring groundsheets for their tents. (Sleeping in a big puddle isn't much fun.)

There were quite a few fireworks thanks to [info]morphix84, and also quite a bit of alcohol because of [info]crynus. (Who, when drunk, started rambling off in the first person about a plot involving a character from a comic book and the occult.) Also there were S***, R***, T*** and [info]hotohorisama.

[info]hotohorisama hung out the next day, and I headed back to Waterloo on a late bus, with plenty of fireworks to see on the way back.

I'll probably end up organizing another camping trip at some point later on in the summer. And, on another note, I really need a real vacation. Something that doesn't involve either school or work.

2:26 pm - Exams are Done
What's this? An entry? I know, I'm shocked as well.

I've been done exams for a bit less than a week now, so I thought I should really take the time and update this. You know, let everyone know that I'm still alive and such.

My exams ranged from moderately easy (Computer Science) to very difficult (Calculus). But they're over now, and I think I did fairly well. It doesn't really matter anymore, because I'm done first year. I'll find out my marks in a few weeks, and find out how I actually did in all the courses.

But first year is over now, and there's no point in me worrying about my marks. I'm pretty sure I passed all my courses, and that's all that matters. In about two weeks, I begin work at Arius Software in Waterloo for the summer. It sounds like an interesting job, although I have been warned by other students that they work you fairly hard. Which could even be a good thing.

Before leaving Waterloo, N*** let me copy some of his music collection, so I now have roughly 30 hours more of music than I did before. As I've gradually gotten tired of most of the music I already have over the school year, this is Very Good. I'm also glad that Canadian law still allows the copying of music under certain limited circumstances. ("Private Copying", copying of music for personal use. Distribution of copied music is illegal.)

I'm current in Richmond Hill for the next while, I'll be moving to Waterloo for the summer around May 1st. (Phone number forthcoming, I don't actually know it yet) If anyone is going to be visiting or living in Waterloo during the summer, let me know and we can do something.

Also, on another note, as some of you may already have been told, I am planning a camping trip sometime around the long weekend in May (May 21 - May 24). If you're interested, let me know and I'll keep you informed as plans develop.

Grab the book nearest you, turn to page 23, find line 5. Write down what it says, along with these sentences, and post it in your journal.

Nothing much has happened recently. I have a place to live for the summer. All that remains is to hammer out the details with T*** and his roommate.

Also, I found this.

This week sucked. I don't want to bore everyone with all the details, but briefly: I was sick, I lost my linux partition, I found out about an excellent place to live, and then later found out that I'd missed my chance with said place due to being sick.

Oh, and I had my birthday too.

Maybe the weekend will be good?

11:50 pm - Reading Week(end)
Well, I had an enjoyable long weekend. But now it's back to school and another two midterms.

Today's midterm (Computer Science) went fairly well, and it's looking like Wednesday won't be quite as difficult as I'd thought. There's only one problem. I managed to forget *all* of my textbooks (except Calculus, which I never really need) back with my family. So I don't have them to study from. Or rather, I don't have my Genetics textbook to study from, Digital Circuits is fairly straightforward.

Everyone (including myself) has been complaining a lot about the lack of a reading week break, but I no longer think it was really all that bad. Just enough of a break to begin catching my breath.

And now, it's off to bed for me. I've decided I'll see what happens if I start sleeping at a reasonable time. (As opposed to my usual solution - waking up at a reasonable time. Usually just in time to be late.)

12:03 pm - Interviews
I'm up to six interview requests. Which is good, because many of the people I know have received less than two.

My interview this morning with Arius felt like it went fairly well. I knew the answers to most of the questions, and I solved the problem solving skills question, although not nearly as quickly as I would have liked.

I have another interview this afternoon, and then I'm heading home for the weekend. I really wish I had more free time, or even just didn't procrastinate as much. (In fact, I think I probably have plenty of free time, but that the procrastination thing makes it feel like I don't) Life would be much more enjoyable.

I woke up today to a nosebleed (not a pleasant experience)

Then I went to Calculus (for the first, and last time I'll be able to make it this week)

Now I'm dressed up for my interview this afternoon.

I don't have all that much to say, and I don't have all that much time.

What the fuck?!

This semester is so much easier than last semester. Two of the assignments I thought were due early next week, turn out to not be due until the week after. (Calculus and CS)

The computer assignment doesn't even look all that hard.

And on another note, I have two interviews tomorrow. Hopefully everything will go well.
